Marie-Eve Gilla, who came to Washington from Burgundy in the early 1990s and is now the winemaker at Forgeron, says that although she is pleased with many of the wines she has made so far, especially a red blend called “Vinfinity”, she prefers to look five or ten years ahead. By that time, the appellations young vineyards will have started to mature and their novice managers, some of whom were raised to farm wheat and sweet onions, not grapes, will have honed their skills. Part of the challenge is learning how to control vineyards and quality grape production in a high-desert climate with long, bright summer days and dark, frosty winter nights. But she sees huge local promise, too.
